Hasan urges political parties to work together to tackle COVID-19 crisis

DHAKA, April 22, 2020 (BSS) – Information Minister and Awami League joint general secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud today urged all the political parties, including BNP, to stand by people amid coronavirus pandemic and do politics unitedly for protecting them from the lethal virus.

He made the call while giving an address to media from the AL President’s Dhanmondi political office in the capital this evening.

Hasan said “This is not time for doing politics and playing blame game. This is time for all political parties to work unitedly to tackle the mega disaster (coronavirus pandemic).”

Highlighting the global coronavirus situation, he said so far 120 people died of COVID-19 and 3,772 people were infected with coronavirus in the country after first COVID-19 case was reported here on March 8 last.

The information minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls and sought early recovery of the COVID-19 patients.

The first COVID-19 case was reported in Turkey on March 11 and since then, 2,259 people died of COVID-19 and 95,591 people were infected with the virus there, he said.

“Our situation is still better than many other countries. But, along with the government, we have to work together so that the situation does not worsen,” he added.

About the government’s preparedness to prevent coronavirus, Hasan said before the first coronavirus case was detected in the country, the ruling Awami League alongside the government has been working to protect people from the virus, following the instruction of AL President Sheikh Hasina. He said since the beginning of this crisis, the AL relief sub-committee has been distributing relief goods, which are being reached at the grassroots level.

“The relief distribution programme will continue,” AL joint general secretary said.

AL office secretary Barrister Biplab Barua and its relief and social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi were present.

On the occasion, Dr Hasan handed over coronavirus preventive materials to president of Chattogram Journalists Forum, Dhaka, Shahed Siddiqui, and general secretary Mujib Masud.
