59 coronavirus patients so far detected in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, April 22, 2020 (BSS) – A total of 59 coronavirus infected patients have so far been detected in the division as more eight people were found COVID-19 positive on Tuesday after testing 188 samples at the laboratory in the city.

Health officials said among the eight COVID-19 positive people, one from Thakurgaon was detected for the second time yesterday.

So, the actual number of newly detected COVID-19 patients on Tuesday is seven including one each of Panchagarh, Nilphamari and Thakurgaon and two each of Rangpur and Dinajpur districts in the division.

“Currently, the total number of COVID-19 infected patients stood at 59 in Rangpur division,” Focal Person of COVID-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr. ZA Siddiqui told BSS.

Among the COVID-19 patients, nine are in Rangpur, 10 in Nilphamari, 13 each in Dinajpur and Gaibandha, seven in Thakurgaon, two each in Lalmonirhat and Panchagarh and three in Kurigram districts of the division.

Of them, 30 are undergoing treatments at different hospitals, 24 at home and five others, including four of Gaibandha and one of Nilphamari, were already released after recovery.

Meanwhile, the total number of quarantined people rose to 21,343 as 634 more people were quarantined at home or institutions during the last 24 hours till 8 am today.

“In the last 24 hours, the numbers of quarantined people are 22 in Rangpur, 69 in Panchagarh, 141 in Nilphamari, three in Lalmonirhat, 58 in Kurigram, 42 in Thakurgaon and 94 in Dinajpur districts,” Dr. Siddiqui said.

Since the virus outbreak, a total of 7,885 people were released from home or institutional quarantine and 13,458 others are in quarantine now in Rangpur division.

A total of 464 suspected COVID-19 patients were put on institutional quarantine and of them, 115 released and 349 are remaining there now.

Besides, 69 suspected coronavirus patients were admitted to the isolation units of different hospitals, and of them, 13 released and 56 are undergoing treatments.

Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Md. Amin Ahmed Khan said the health administration has put maximum importance on taking more steps to ensure treatments for the COVID-19 infected patients in Rangpur division.

“The Armed Forces, police and other law enforcement agencies have engaged maximum efforts in maintaining the lockdown status and inspiring people in staying at home to prevent community transmission of COVID-19 in the division,” he said.

He especially suggested the common people both in rural and urban areas not to become panicked as around 40 percent of COVID-19 infected patients will have no complications and they can take normal treatments staying at home.

Some 40 percent coronavirus infected patients will need treatments at institutional quarantine for their recovery in a shorter period.

“Only eight to 12 percent of the other 20 percent patients may have some complications with need of ICU beds and ventilator support,” he said, adding that 13 beds have already been installed at two government hospitals in Rangpur division.

Besides, initiatives are on to provide treatments to the infected patients using the ICU beds, facilities and equipment available at different private sector hospitals, if needed in the division.
