RAJSHAHI, April 20, 2020 (BSS)- Three more people have been tested positive for Covid-19 in Rajshahi division, bringing the total number of coronavirus reported cases in the division to 13.

Existence of the virus has been spotted after testing samples of 94 people at the COVID-19 Laboratory installed in the Department of Virology in Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) here on Sunday.

Afterwards, houses of the respective infected persons in Rajshahi, Naogaon and Sirajgonj districts were kept on lockdown.

Prof Dr Sabera Gulnahar, head of the virology department and in-charge of the laboratory, said they found thirteen positive cases of coronavirus among the total 923 samples, so far, tested in the laboratory to detect coronavirus (COVID-19) since its start on April 1 last.

Of the total people, five in Rajshahi, two each in Joypurhat, Bogura and Pabna and one each in Naogaon and Sirajgonj districts were diagnosed with the novel coronavirus till yesterday.

Prof Gulnahar added that most of the infected persons have been found as returnees from Dhaka and Narayangonj.

Meanwhile, local civil administration with assistance of armed forces and other law-enforcing agencies have geared up the vigilance activities to fight the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak through successful enforcement of the existing lockdown in the district.

District administration has taken a decision of bringing all the people who returned back to Rajshahi from Dhaka and Narayanganj under quarantine and testing.

Deputy Commissioner Hamidul Haque said hundreds of people have rushed into the district through trucks, covered vans and fish-carrying vehicles over the past couple of weeks.

He, however, said the existing restriction measures have been tightened through setting up checkpoints at all the entry points of the district to halt the mass-rushing.
