RANGPUR, April 13, 2020 (BSS) – Installation of ten intensive care unit (ICU) beds began today at the newly constructed 100-bed Rangpur Shishu Hospital (RSH) to provide treatments to the coronavirus (COVID-19) patients in critical conditions.

“The necessary equipment and machinery allocated by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reached here on Sunday for installation of the ten ICU beds,” Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Md. Amin Ahmed Khan told BSS today.

The expert engineers from Dhaka are installing the ten ICU beds with modern facilities, including ventilators, at RSH aiming at providing treatments to the COVID-19 infected patients of Rangpur division, if necessary in the future.

“If some COVID-19 infected patients of the division need ICU support before completion of installation of the ten ICU units at RSH, they will be sent to Dhaka for treatments in consultation with the higher authorities concerned,” Dr. Khan said.

He said the 100-bed RSH in Rangpur city, 10 beds at the Isolation Unit of RMCH and three to four beds at every upazila health complex in Rangpur division are currently being used for isolation of suspected COVID-19 infected patients.

Besides, Haragachh Hospital, Tazhat Chest Disease Hospital, Primary Teachers Training Institute and other facilities of Rangpur city and many other health services providing facilities across Rangpur division will be used as Corona Units, when necessary.

“The government is taking more steps to provide treatments to COVID-19 patients and will consider using the ICU beds, facilities and equipment available at different private sector hospitals in the division if the situation deteriorates,” Dr. Khan added.
