SC bar to create emergency fund amid coronavirus crisis

DHAKA, April 11, 2020 (BSS) – Supreme Court (SC) Bar Association has decided to create an emergency fund of Taka 50 lakh for its young members, who have been affected the most by the ongoing general holidays declared due to coronavirus outbreak.

“The newly-elected committee of the association took five such decisions at an informal meeting on April 10. We would increase the money of the fund gradually. We would do every possible thing for the development of the association and the welfare of its members,” SC bar association general secretary Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal told BSS.

“As professionals, we are facing uncertainty due to the long ongoing holiday and lockdown due to coronavirus. Especially, our young members have become more concerned by this. That is why, we have taken these decisions,” he added.

According to a press release issued by the association, it would grand loan from the emergency fund to its members considering case to case situation, and the member will be able to repay the interest-free loan within three years.

The association will arrange interest-free loan from its ‘Benevolent Fund’ for its members and they would get three-year time to repay the loan.

The association would raise demands of special allocation and interest-free loan for lawyers considering the corona crisis, to Bangladesh Bar Council and departments concerned of the government.

Supreme Court Bar Association would draw Chief Justice’s attention for launching virtual court as like India and Pakistan. The association will also try to raise a fund through ‘voluntary contribution’ of its well-off members and would provide grant from this fund according the necessity of a member.

The newly-elected committee would implement the decisions after taking charges of office on April 13.
