BMPMA places a set of demands before govt. to offset COVID-19 shock

DHAKA, April 9, 2020 (BSS) – Bangladesh Mobile Phone Manufacturers’
Association (BMPMA) has placed a set of demands before the government,
including providing financial support and soft term loans to its member
factories, to offset the shock of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

In a letter sent to Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on April 6 signed
by BMPMA President Ruhul Alam Al Mahbub and General Secretary Jakaria Shahid,
the association urged the Finance Minister to provide financial support as
like the Package 5 of the Stimulus Package announced recently by Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina to give salaries and allowances of workers of the
concerned industries for the next six months (April-September) this year,
said a press release.

The BMPMA also demanded of the Finance Minister to provide soft term loans
to its member organizations from the working capital fund under Package one
under the stimulus package announced by the Premier while the entrepreneurs
would repay such loans in 18 months.

The association also demanded of the government to exempt the utility
bills of the member’s closed down factories for the next six months.

The release said a total of nine mobile phone factories have so far been
set up in the country and they are producing import-substitute products and
thus meeting the local demand.

But, due to the impact of the COVID-19, the sector is passing hard time
like other sectors of the country and thus government support is needed to
help stay this sector alive.
