Security measures tighten to stem coronavirus spread in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, April 7, 2020 (BSS) – The civil administrations in assistance with armed forces and all other law-enforcing agencies have stepped up the security measures to contain the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the region.

The security forces set up checkpoints in all the entry points of the city and the district as well to stop all modes of vehicles except the emergency to and from the city to halt community infection of the virus.

“We adopted all-out measures to ensure social distancing, restricting gathering and food to the hand-to-mouth families,” said Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Humayun Kabir Khandaker here today.

He said a high-level coordination meeting of three committees — Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC), Divisional Administration and District Administration — was held here yesterday to way out means to contain the spread of coronavirus.

More than 3,432 tonnes of rice was distributed among 3,10,738 families so far while Taka 1.08 lakh cash among 1,36,958 families in the division, he said, adding that 2,101 more tonnes of rice and Taka 99.06 lakh cash are in stock for distribution.

A total of 706 doctors and 1,330 nurses are working in 169 public and private hospitals in the division, the government high official said, adding around 1,748 beds among 4,119 were already prepared for treatment of the possible COVID-19 infected patients to face any emergency situation.

Besides, 10,765 personal protective equipment (PPEs) have already been distributed to protect the frontline medical professionals from being got infected with the virus, he said, adding around 14,891 PPEs are in stock at present.

On the other hand, a total of 458 more people were released from both home and institutional quarantine in all eight districts under Rajshahi division in the past 24 hours till 8 am today.

As of today, the number of total released people from home-quarantine stood at 6,424 while currently 871 others remained in home and institutional quarantine in the division.

Divisional Director of Health Dr Gopendra Nath Acharya said a total of 7,265 people have so far been put under home quarantine since March 10 to prevent community transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Meanwhile, a total of 67 new persons have been kept under home quarantine in the division in the last 24 hours till this morning.

Among the new ones, five have been kept at home quarantine in Rajshahi, six in Chapainawabganj, 16 in Naogaon, two in Natore, six in Joypurhat, 16 in Bogura, 12 in Sirajgonj and four in Pabna districts.

He added that an integrated measure has been adopted to bring all the overseas returnees and other suspects under home quarantine to curb the virus spread.

He also said comprehensive efforts are continuing to follow the health related guidelines like staying at home, social distancing and washing hands with soap.
