Shamsur Rahman Sherif laid to rest in Pabna

DHAKA, April 2, 2020 (BSS) – Former Land Minister and an Awami League lawmaker from Pabna-4 constituency Shamsur Rahman Sherif was laid to eternal rest at his family graveyard at Lakkhikunda village under Ishwardi upazila in Pabna this evening following two namaj-e-janazas.

Sherif, also a freedom fighter, died of old-age complications at the age of 80 in the city’s United Hospital around 5 this morning.

Later, his body was taken to his residence at Ishwardi upazila town at 4pm.

His first janaza was held in front of his residence at Alibardi road in the Ishwardi municipality.

Led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shihab Uddin and Ishwardi thana officer-in-charge Bahauddin Faruki, a contingent of police gave a guard of honor to him recalling his role in the Liberation War.

Pabna Deputy Commissioner Kabir Mahmud, Police Super Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, Zila Parishad Chairman Rezaul Rahim Lal, Ishwardi Upazila Chairman Nuruzzaman Biswas, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shihab Raihan were present on the occasion.

Sherif was suffering from various old-age complications and was admitted to the hospital on March 11 last, Pabna AL general secretary Golam Faruk Prince, MP, told BSS.

The AL lawmaker left his wife, four sons, five daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers and political followers to mourn his death.

Born in a renowned Muslim family of Pabna in 1940, Sherif was elected to Parliament from Pabna-4 constituency in 1996, 2001, 2008, 2014 and 2018.

Sherif, also a freedom fighter and language movement veteran, served as the land minister of the AL government after electing in the 2014 general elections.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Awami League (AL) lawmaker and former minister for land Shamsur Rahman Sherif.

In a condolence message, the prime minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.
