60,600 poor families getting food in Rajshahi district

RAJSHAHI, April 2, 2020 (BSS)- The government is providing food assistance to around 60,6000 hand-to-mouth families in the district to overcome their financial hardships caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

District administration has allocated 607 tonnes of rice for the purpose besides allocating Taka 14.50 lakh in cash.

Deputy Commissioner Hamidul Haque said the foodstuffs are being reached to the doorsteps of the beneficiaries through people of the local government institutions like Upazila Parishad, Pourashava and Union Parishad.

“We have also stock of 189 tonnes more rice and Taka 4.5 lakh in cash for distribution,” he said adding the low-income villagers are also getting support from local government funds.

Based on necessity, the extent of support will be enhanced after identification of the hand-to-mouth families, he added.

The poor families were enlisted through the public representatives. If there are any allegations related to the prepared list stern action will be taken against those found to be guilty after investigation.

In addition to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, 16 doctors and 13 nurses were kept ready in 10 upazila-level government hospitals and medical centres. 115 out of total 462 beds have also been kept ready separately to tackle any emergency situation, Hamidul Haque added.

Doctors and paramedics were provided with 337 personal protective equipment and 663 others remained stockpiled.

He urged the people to remain in the house instead of coming out from it unnecessary.
