Sumi gets rickshaw on Info Minister’s phone call in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI, Mar 30, 2020 (BSS)- It came as a blessing in disguise for a woman rickshaw-puller here as she was provided with a new battery-run riskshaw and cash money today for her livelihood following Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud’s initiative.
General Secretary of Rajshahi City unit of Bangladesh Awami League Dablu Sarker donated the rickshaw to Sumi, a daily wage-earner in Rajshahi city, responding to a phone call of Dr Hasan Mahmud.
Sumi used to drive a rickshaw as a means of her livelihood for the last couple of years in the city. But she has fallen in a financial hardship due to the ongoing home-confinement caused by coronavirus (COVID-19). Her hardship multiplied when she couldn’t pay the dues of her rickshaw to its owner.
Going through a humanitarian story in a Rajshahi-based online newspaper on the issue, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud directed Dablu Sarker to stand beside Sumi.
Following the direction, Dablu Sarker provided a new battery-run rickshaw, Taka 5,000 in cash and foodstuffs to the woman this noon.
Hailed from Parbanni village in Boraigram village of Natore district, Sumi came to the city with her two children as a destitute, and has been living in a polythene-made thatched house in Luxipur Bhatapara area.
Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Hamidul Haque and some other benevolent persons also gave foodstuffs and cash money to the needy woman today.
