I will quit captaincy if can’t do well: Tamim Iqbal
DHAKA, March 14, 2020 (BSS) – Tamim Iqbal will quit captaincy all by himself if he can’t help the side becomes a better team by his captaincy with one and half years.
The opener is not given any specific timeframe for his captaincy stint but the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said he is appointed as captain for long term.
The board chose him despite his bad track record as captain. In four ODIs that he led the side, Bangladesh lost all of the matches, with conceding a 3-0 whitewash at the hands of Sri Lanka. At the same time, in domestic circuit, his captaincy record is not good enough.
Tamim however urged the fans and media to keep patience on him and give him some time to bring the success for the team.
“For the time being, I just want to say-please keep patience on me. We can do badly in one or two series, even in five matches. Hopefully the situation won’t be that bad. But don’t be impatient on men. I will try to make everything right very quickly. But if I see I can’t do anything right in six months, or one year or one and half years, I will quite it all by my own,” Tamim said here on Saturday.
“To be honest I am not very experienced captain. And I don’t lead the side much in domestic cricket also. So you have to give me the time,” he said.
He also revealed when the board decided to give him the captaincy, he wanted to take it only if he is given long term as captain and the board complied with it.
“To give someone the captaincy is a process. I wanted it as long term if it is given to me. The board complied with me and gave me the long term captaincy. If you get the captaincy for long term, you can devise a plan for the team, which is not possible in the case of one or two series,” he said.
Tamim however revealed that he is not sure whether the team’s performance or captaincy will be a burden for his batting. At the moment, Tamim is enjoying a good form with the willow.
‘I don’t know whether it will put adverse impact on my batting if the team can’t do well. But it is sure I need the support from the media and fans, so that I can do my work properly and take the team in certain height,” he added.
