Hectic efforts to tackle coronavirus spread in Rangpur

RANGPUR, March 11, 2020 (BSS) – The authorities concerned have formed an
11-member committee as a part of hectic efforts to monitor coronavirus
situation, create awareness, prevent its outbreak and provide treatments if
someone is affected by the lethal virus.

Civil Surgeon Dr. Hirombo Kumar Roy said at his conference room in the late
afternoon on Tuesday while answering questions by journalists on official
preparations to prevent and tackle coronavirus outbreak in the district.

“We have formed the committee to contain coronavirus spread with Deputy
Commissioner Md. Asib Ahsan as its Chairman and me as Member Secretary,” he
said.

As a part of early preparations, 200 beds have been kept ready to keep
people coming from abroad or suspected coronavirus infected patients in
quarantine at the newly built 100-bed Rangpur Shishu Hospital in the city, he
said.

“Besides, the five-bed isolation unit is ready at Rangpur Medical College
Hospital for providing treatments to coronavirus patients, if detected
anytime,” he said.

In addition, the decision has been taken to use the 31-bed Haragachh
Hospital in Rangpur metropolis as Corona Unit if the number of suspected
coronavirus infected people increases in the district.

The Civil Surgeon said there is nothing to be afraid of coronavirus
infection as its mortality rate is just around two percent while the recovery
rate is 98 percent.

“It doesn’t matter for common people to be fear or panicked. Rather
everyone should comply with the health directives of the government,” he
said, adding that coronavirus usually spreads through cough and everyone
should remain careful.

He said an official control room has been opened at the Civil Surgeon’s
Office to deal with coronavirus situation and common people can call at
hotline numbers of 01718-564172 or 0521-62150 for emergency assistance.

“No coronavirus infected patient has so far been identified in Rangpur,”
the Civil Surgeon said, and advised all citizens not to be panicked and
maintain the health directives to remain safe from coronavirus.
