Bangladesh ahead much int’l gender wage gap: Alam

DHAKA, March 10, 2020 (BSS) – State minister for foreign affairs Md Shahriar Alam today said Bangladesh is ahead much in reducing male-female wage gap comparing to the international average as per the recent global report of International Labour Organization (ILO).

According to the ILO, he said the international average of gender wage gap is 21 percent which is only two percent in Bangladesh while speaking at a seminar on International Women’s Day at the Jatiya Press Club here.

Diplomatic Correspondent Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) and Swedish Embassy in Dhaka jointly organized the seminar titled “Women Leadership in Media: Challenges and Way to Forward”.

The state minister said the present government under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is not only working for women empowerment also trying to create gender parity at every tier of the society.

Alam said the government’s efforts have been reflecting at the primary education where a number of girl students are more than boys while pass rate of girls are higher than the boys at the secondary school level.

He said these results show that women will start dominate their male counterparts in Bangladesh within 10 to 15 years.

However, Alam said through Bangladesh advanced a lot in women empowerment, there is no scope to feel self-compliance as many more initiatives are need to be realized to achieve the gender parity.

Swedish ambassador in Dhaka Charlotta Schlyter, UN Women Bangladesh Country Representative Shoko Ishikawa, JPC General Secretary Farida Yesmin, and Daily Ittefaq editor Tasmima Hossain also spoke at the seminar, among others.

DCAB president Angur Nahar Monty presided over the discussion and acting general secretary Mizanur Rahman gave the welcome speech while freelance journalist and researcher Shamim Ara Sheuli presented the keynote speech.
