Adequate early preparedness to reduce disaster risks stressed

RANGPUR, March 10, 2020 (BSS) – Officials and experts at a discussion today
stressed on adopting adequate early preparedness for ensuring efficient
disaster management to reduce risks of natural disasters and loss of human
lives.

The district administration organised the discussion at Zila School ground
in observance of the National Disaster Preparedness Day- 2020 with the theme
of ‘Preventive measures to reduce disaster’s severity; Will expedite
sustainable development’.

The Department of Disaster Management under the Ministry of Disaster
Management and Relief and a number of non-government organisations extended
assistance to celebrate the day with colourful programmes.

The programmes included rally, discussion, drawing competitions for school
students on natural disasters, distribution of prizes and mock for earthquake
and fire incidents preparedness.

Fire Service and Civil Defense personnel and volunteers of Bangladesh Red
Crescent Society (BDRCS) and Scouts demonstrated mock fire fighting and
earthquake management drills in presence of officials, students, teachers and
commoners,.

Deputy Commissioner Md.Asib Ahsan led the rally that paraded the city streets with
participation of hundreds of students, scouts, officials, employees,
representatives of different NGOs and voluntary organisations.

Deputy Director (Local Government) for Rangpur Syed Farhad Hossain
addressed the discussion as chief guest with Headmaster of Zila School Abu
Raihan Md. Mizanur Rahman in the chair.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer ATM Akhteruzzaman, Deputy
Director of Rangpur Fire Service and Civil Defense Station KM Saiful Islam,
its Assistant Director Wahedul Islam and Secretary of Rangpur unit of BDRCS
Rawshanul Kawser Sangram also addressed.

The speakers discussed the current natural disaster situation due to
climate change putting stress on imparting training and education,
disseminating information and warnings among common people to reduce disaster
risks.

Akhteruzzaman said the government is strengthening the efficient emergency
response management systems and adopting early preparedness for post-disaster
management to reduce losses of human lives and properties.

The chief guest said Bangladesh has achieved global appreciation as a role
model for disaster management through efficient management of floods, tremor,
tidal surges, cyclones, droughts and river erosion reducing losses of human
lives.
