Collaborative efforts for disaster mitigation stressed

RAJSHAHI, Mar 10, 2020 (BSS)- Speakers at a post-rally discussion here today said loss of lives and assets caused by natural disasters could be mitigated to a great extent through collective efforts of all and better management.

They said the elderly people should be given priority in the activities and process of disaster reduction as they are more vulnerable to any disasters. District administration organized the discussion at the playground of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to mark the National Day for Disaster Preparedness-2020 in association with various development organizations.

Deputy Commissioner Hamidul Haque addressed the discussion as chief guest with District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Aminul Haque in the chair. Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension Shamsul Haque, Deputy Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense Abdur Rashid, Deputy Director in District Information Office Nafeyala Nasrin and RPI Principal Engineer Farid Uddin also spoke.

The speakers observed that proper and effective uses of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can help reduce loss of lives and property caused by natural disasters.

There is no scope of preventing occurrence of natural catastrophe but there is scope of reducing damage and other casualties through the best uses of modern technologies and communications.

Chief Guest Hamidul Haque highlighted the significance of the day and emphasized on good collaboration and coordination to mitigate the sufferings of natural disasters putting forward a set of recommendations about ways to reduce the risks and losses caused by the disasters.

He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach for reducing the prevailing risks of natural disaster by creating mass awareness among people. Apart from this, he said a need-oriented and realistic plan should be formulated through wide-ranging survey and importance should be given to timely implementation of the time-befitting programmes to face the risks as early as possible.
