Child killed, 7 civilians injured in E. Afghan blast

JALALABAD, Afghanistan, June 13, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – A 10-year-old child
was killed and seven people wounded in a blast in Jalalabad city, capital of
Afghanistan’s eastern province of Nangarhar on Wednesday, provincial
government said in a statement.

The explosion occurred roughly at 6:00 a.m. local time in front of a small
shop in Police District 2 of the city when an improvised explosive device
(IED) exploded, the statement added.

Those among the injured were four children and the shop owner. Police have
shifted the victims to a main regional hospital in the city.

Motive behind the incident remained unknown.

The Afghan civilians continue to bear the brunt of armed conflicts as more
than 3,430 civilians were killed and over 7,000 others injured in conflict-
related incidents in 2017, according to figures released by the United
Nations mission in the country.

The mission has attributed 65 percent of the civilian casualties to the
Taliban and other insurgent groups, 20 percent to security forces over the
period while 11 percent were attributed to both sides during clashes and the
rest 4 percent were caused by other reasons.
