International Women’s Day celebrated in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, MAR 8, 2020 (BSS) – International Women’s Day-2020 was
celebrated in the district today with a call for establishing a
nondiscriminatory and equitable society to take the nation ahead.

To mark the day, Strengthening Women’s Ability for Productive New
Opportunities (SWAPNO) in collaboration with local NGO Gana Unnayan Kendra
(GUK) celebrated the day through elaborate programmes in Shaghata upazila of
the district.

A grand rally led by upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Mohiuddin Zahangir was
brought out from his office and ended at the same venue after parading the
main roads of the upazila headquarters.

Later, a discussion meeting on the importance of the day was also held at
the upazila auditorium with upazila women affairs officer Abu Sayeed Hossain
in the chair.

UNO Mohiuddin Zahangir addressed the function as the chief guest and
assistant commissioner (Land) M. Shakil Ahmed as special guest.

District Manager of SWAPNO project Jahidul Haque, project coordinator-GUK
Dulal Karim, and beneficiary Shaplan Khatun among others addressed the
meeting,

The speakers said the country’s womenfolk had been showing their utmost
efficiency with reputation in every tiers of the nation.

They also emphasized for concerted efforts of all government and non-
government entities to establish the rights of women in the society as the
nation could not move by leaving aside half of the population inactive.

Mohiuddin Zahangir said a woman can consolidate her position in the society
as well as in the family and none will dare to neglect her if she earns money
through work.

The government has enacted necessary laws with a view to protecting the
women and children from all types of violence incorporating provision of
severe punishment, the UNO added.

A large number of upazila level officials, public representatives,
political leaders, NGO activists, and invited persons including media men
took part in the programmes.

Similar programmes were also held at Fulchhari upazila of the district
today marking the day, said Jahidul Haque, district manager, SWAPNO project.
