RAJSHAHI, March 8, 2020 (BSS) – Various government and non-government
development organisations observed the International Women’s Day-2020
befittingly here today with the unanimous call of freeing the womenfolk from
all sorts of violence, disparity and discrimination.

“I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights” was the theme for
International Women’s Day 2020.

Marking the day, district administration and department of women affairs
jointly organised a discussion at Human Resource Development Training Centre.

Advocate Adiba Anjum Mita, MP, and social worker Shaheen Akter Rainy
addressed the meeting as chief and special guests respectively with Deputy
Director of the Department of Local Government Division Parvej Raihan in the
chair.

Deputy Director of Department of Women Affairs Shobnom Shirin and local
unit chairman of Jatiya Mohila Sangstha Morjina Parveen also spoke.

The speakers laid emphasis on concerted efforts of all government and non-
government entities concerned for establishing the rights of women in the
society.

Lawmaker Adiba Anjum said more community participation is needed to build a
society free from child marriage as it’s a precondition to end violence
against women.

She mentioned gender balance is the precondition to substantial and
sustainable progress of the nation and it is very important to the
development of national economy.

Besides, responsive support from the community, especially teachers,
parents and leaders of influence has become a must for stopping child
marriage.

Eradicating child marriage is imperative as the social menace hampers many
socio-economic developments in the country.

Highlighting their laudable contribution to the nation-building process,
Adiba Anjum also called for acknowledging the domestic and farm women workers
as labourers so that they could ensure their legitimate rights.

Parvej Raihan said there is no alternative to creating community awareness
through raising school-based awareness on adolescence for combating the
existing rate of child marriage.

He emphasized the need for freeing society from gender discrimination to
establish a non discriminatory and equitable society for taking the nation
forward successfully.

Various other development organisations including Bangladesh Mohila
Parishad, Association for Community Development (ACD) and Ladies Organisation
for Social Welfare also observed the day through separate programmes.
