14 killed in Habiganj, B’baria road accidents

DHAKA, March 6, 2020 (BSS) – Fourteen people were killed and eight others injured in separate road accidents in Habiganj and Brahmanbaria districts today.

In Habiganj, eight people were killed and four others injured in a road accident on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Kandigaon area under Nabiganj upazila of the district this morning.

The accident occurred in the area when a Sylhet-bound microbus hit a roadside tree and caught fire after its driver lost control over the steering around 6 am, leaving eight people dead on the spot and four others injured, said Md Ershadul Haq Bhuiya, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sherpur Highway Police.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The injured were taken to Habiganj Adhunik General Hospital, the OC added.

In another accident in Brahmanbaria, at least six people were killed and four others injured as a microbus caught fire after head-on collision with a bus on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Rampura Bhati Kalisima area under Bijoynagar upazila of the distract in the early hours of today.

The deceased were identified as microbus driver Sohan, 20, Harun Miah 40, Shakil Miah, 25, Sagar ,22, Rifat, 16, and Emon Miah ,19. All of the residents of Bandar Thana in Narayanganj district.

Mainul Islam, officer-in-charge of Khati Hata Highway Police Station, said the accident occurred in the area when the Sylhet-bound microbus from Narayanganj caught fire due to cylinder explosion after it collided head-on with a Dhaka-bound bus of ‘Limon Paribahan’ around 3.30 am, leaving six microbus passengers dead on the spot and four others seriously injured.

The injured were taken to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, while the on-duty doctor referred them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment, the sources said.
