President mourns death of Buddhist religious leader Suddhananda Mahathero

DHAKA, March 3, 2020 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid today condoled the death of Suddhananda Mahathero, the foremost Buddhist religious leader and chief abbot of Kamalapur Dharmarajika Buddhist Mahabihar.

In a condolence message, the President, who is now in London on his return to Dhaka from Uruguay as part of his an 11-day overseas tour, expressed profound shock and sorrow at his death.

Suddhananda Mahathero breathed his last this morning at a city hospital at the age of 87.
He had been suffering from respiratory problem, diabetes and other old-age complications.

The head of the state said Ekushey Padak’-winning Buddhist Sangha Nayak Shuddhananda Mahathero played an important role in establishing peace and harmony along with spreading the teachings of Lord Buddha.

He also prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.
