Hasan mourns death of Buddhist religious leader Suddhananda Mahathero

DHAKA, Mar 3, 2020 (BSS) – Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today
expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Suddhananda Mahathero,
foremost Buddhist religious leader and chief abbot of Kamalapur Dharmarajika
Buddhist Mahabihar.

In a condolence message, Dr Hasan, also ruling Awami League Joint General
Secretary, said Ekushey Padak’-winning Buddhist Sangha Nayak Shuddhananda
Mahathero will be remembered by people for long.

He prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and conveyed profound
sympathy to the bereaved members of his family.

“He will remain alive in our memory,” said the information minister. Dr
Hasan said Suddhananda Mahathero received prestigious Ekushey Padak in 2012
for his contribution to social service.

“Suddhananda Mahathero and I were from the same place, Raozan upazila of
Chattogram. He had been the President of Bangladesh Bouddha Kristi Prachar
Sangha for long,” recalled Dr Hasan.

The information minister visited Kamalapur Dharmarajika Buddhist Mahabihar
this afternoon and paid respect to Suddhananda Mahathero, said a press
release.

Suddhananda Mahathero passed away this morning while undergoing treatment
at a hospital in Dhaka.

He was 87.

He had been suffering from respiratory obstruction, diabetes and other
old-age complications.
