More SMEs for bolstering Rajshahi economy stressed

RAJSHAHI, March 1, 2020 (BSS) – Speakers at a seminar here stressed the
need for exploring new small and medium enterprises (SME) for bolstering the
region’s economy for improving living and livelihood condition of the local
people.

Terming the SME as the root foundation of any region’s economy they
unanimously viewed that more expansion of investment in the sector has become
an urgent need to make the region economically vibrant.

SME Foundation of the Ministry of Industries organised the seminar styled
“Impacts of Local Products in SMEs- Problems and Prospects” on Collectorate
Ground” yesterday afternoon as part of the ongoing eight-day long Regional
SME Products Fair- 2020 starting at the same ground since February 24 last.

Professor Mahbubar Rahman from the Department of Marketing in Rajshahi
University presented the keynote paper.

Regional Director of Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation
(BSCIC) Tamanna Rahman and President of Bangladesh Silk Industries Owners
Association Liakat Ali spoke as panel discussants with Additional Deputy
Commissioner (Revenue) Nazrul Islam in the chair.

Speakers said SME’s successful promotion could be an effective means of
alleviating poverty, generating employment and thereby accelerating economic
growth.

Explaining various aspects of SMEs for the region’s economic development,
they said the government has taken different initiatives for SME development
including need based training.

They also stressed the need for more investment in this sector for taking
the region forward.
