Small-scale tea cultivation highly profitable: experts

RANGPUR, Feb 25, 2020 (BSS) – Experts at a workshop have said small-scale
tea cultivation on the plain land adopting scientific methods and least
technologies is highly profitable for farmers.

They expressed the view at the motivational training workshop on “Expansion
of small-scale tea cultivation” held at Haripur upazila parishad auditorium
in Thakurgaon on Monday afternoon, said a press release.

Bangladesh Tea Board (BTB) organised the event aiming to expanding small-
scale tea cultivation under its ‘Expansion of Small Holding Tea Cultivation
in Northern Bangladesh Project’ to reach tea cultivation-related services to
farmers.

Government officials, public representatives, political and religious
leaders, 45 new tea farmers, nine Sub-assistant Agriculture Officers (SAAOs)
of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and common farmers
participated in the event.

Deputy Commissioner of Thakurgaon Dr. KM Kamruzzaman Selim attended the
workshop as the chief guest with Haripur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Abdul
Karim in the chair.

Vice-chairman of Haripur upazila Motahara Pervin and Upazila Agriculture
Officer Agriculturist Noimul Huda Sarker addressed the workshop moderated by
Officer-in-Charge of BTB for Thakurgaon district Mohammad Sayedul Haque.

Senior Scientific Officer of BTB and its Project Director of Northern
Bangladesh Project Agriculturist Dr. Mohammad Shameem Al Mamun presented the
keynote paper.

He discussed prospect of farming different tea varieties, management of tea
nursery, insects, weeds, soil and fertilisers, scientific methods and
technologies, pruning and tipping and choosing tea leaves for plucking in the
event.

“The plain land of five northern districts of Panchagarh, Thakurgaon,
Dinajpur, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat is highly fertile and climatic
conditions favourable for tea cultivation,” he said.

Dr. Mamun suggested farmers for expanding small-scale cultivation of tea on
the plainland to earn more profits than many other crops for their faster
economic development to improve living standards.

Agriculturist Noimul Huda directed the SAAOs for reaching scientific
methods, least technologies and services to tea growers at their doorsteps to
expand tea farming in the northern region.

The chief guest suggested for expanded tea cultivation on the small-scale
basis on the plainland to unveil a new horizon of economic prospect for
farmers in the northern region.
