RANGPUR, Feb 25, 2020 (BSS) – Officials and experts at a function have called for innovation and large-scale adoption of modern agricultural technologies to attain sustainability in the agriculture sector amid changing
climate.

They made the call at the inaugural function of a four-day ‘District
Agriculture Technology Fair-2020’ organised by the Department of Agricultural
Extension (DAE) at Khamarbari premises in Kurigram district town on Monday
afternoon.

The Integrated Agriculture, Nutrition and Food Project and Integrated
Agriculture Productivity Project extended assistance in arranging the fair to
introduce farmers and ordinary people with modern agricultural technologies.

Different departments and organisations have set up 20 stalls on the
fairground displaying modern agricultural technologies and machineries and
focusing achievements of farmers in farm-activities.

Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram Sultana Pervin inaugurated the fair by
cutting ribbon as the chief guest in the function presided over by Deputy of
the DAE Agriculturist Dr. Md. Mostafizur Rahman.

Additional Superintendent of Police for Kurigram Minhajul Alam, District
Livestock Officer Dr. Abdul Hye, District Fisheries Officer Kalipado Roy and
District Training Officer of the DAE Agriculturist Shamsuddin Mian addressed
as special guests.

Agriculturist Dr. Rahman said farmers are producing 30 to 32 mounds of
paddy per bigha of land using modern agricultural technologies now in place
of producing only 10 to 12 mounds paddy per bigha of land adopting
traditional practices in the past.

Dr. Hye said the government’s various pragmatic steps, including
providing subsidies in purchasing agricultural machineries for mechanisation
of agriculture, are largely assisting farmers in increasing crop production.

The chief guest called upon agriculture scientists, researchers and
experts for innovation and popularising adoption of modern agricultural
technologies among farmers to increase crop production despite adverse
impacts of climate change.

“We must achieve more success in adaptation to climate change to keep
crop production increasing by mechanisation of agriculture and using modern
agricultural technologies to attain sustainable agriculture,” she added.
