Experts for urgent action to check dengue outbreak in monsoon

DHAKA, Feb 23, 2020 (BSS) – Experts at a workshop today called for taking an urgent action to prevent possible dengue outbreak across the country in the upcoming monsoon.

They said if proper measures are not taken right now to check the vector-borne diseases, dengue may emerge as an endemic across the country, particularly in Dhaka and other cities.

The National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) arranged the workshop at its head office here to release the findings of a study carried out on dengue prevalence.

In his keynote paper, deputy general manager of DGHS’s disease control unit Dr Afsana Alamgir Khan said aedes mosquito that can spread dengue fever and chikungunya are highly found in 11 areas of two Dhaka city corporations.

DGHS director general Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad said Breteau indexes showed that the dengue scenario has improved a little bit this year compared to that of 2017.

DGHS additional director general Prof Dr Sanya Tahmina, its director (disease control) Prof Dr Shahnila Ferdousi, DNCC chief health officer Brigadier General Md Mominur Rahman Mamun, DSCC chief health officer Brigadier General Md Sharif Ahmed and zoology professor of Jahangirnagar University Prof Dr Kabirul Bashar, among others, spoke at the workshop.
