Judge testifies in Ramna Batamul explosive case

DHAKA, Feb 20, 2020 (BSS) – A judge today testified in the case filed
under Explosive Substances Act over 2001 Ramna Batamul blast incident, where
10 people were killed.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Waliul Islam, who had recorded
testimonies of an accused in the case, testified at Dhaka Speedy Trial
Tribunal-1 and was cross-examined afterward.

Judge Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman of the tribunal then adjourned the
hearing till March 12.

Ten people were killed as several bombs were blasted in the Barshabaran
programme (traditional programme to welcome the first day of Bengali New
Year) on April 14, 2001. Then sub-inspector Kabir Hossain of Ramna Police
Station filed the case over the incident.

CID on November 29, 2008, filed two supplementary charge sheets in two
cases, one for murder and another under explosive substances act, against 14
people including banned militant outfit Harkat ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI)
chief Mufti Abdul Hannan.

Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 framed charges against 14 including Mufti
Hannan in the case lodged under explosive substance act over Ramna Batamul
carnage on September 14, 2014.

Dhaka 2nd additional metropolitan sessions’ judge court on June 23,
2014, sentenced eight people including Mufti Hannan to death and six others
to life imprisonment in the murder case lodged over the incident.

The other death-row-convicts are Mawlana Akbar Hossain, Mufti Abdul Hai,
Hafez Jahangir Alam Badar, Mawlana Abu Bakar, Mufti Shafikur Rahman, Mawalana
Tazuddin and Arif Hasan.

Apart from these, Hafez Mawlana Abu Taher, Mawlana Sabbir, Hafez Yahia,
Mawlana Shawkat Osman alias Sheikh Farid, Mawlana Abdur Rouf and Mawlana
Shahadat Ullah Jewel were sentenced to life imprisonment.
