Adoption of uplift programmes for disabled population stressed

RANGPUR, Feb 19, 2020 (BSS) – Adoption and implementation of special uplift
programmes for disabled population by government departments and non-
governmental organisations (NGOs) have become crucial to attain the
sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Officials and leaders of different organisations working for welfare of the
disabled people expressed the view at a workshop on ‘Adoption and
Implementation of Development Programmes For Disabled Population’ held at a
city hotel today .

The National Council of Disabled Women (NCDW) organised the workshop with
the assistance of the ADD International Bangladesh.

Representatives of different government departments and NGOs and leaders of
different disabled people’s organisations (DPOs), disabled people,
development activists, civil society members and journalists participated in
the event.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Syed Enamul Kabir attended the
workshop as the chief guest with President of NCDW Nasima Akhter in the
chair.

Assistant Engineer of the Local Government and Engineering Department
Sajjad Hasnine Md. Heikel, Assistant District Education Officer Shahrina
Dilruba, Senior Assistant Director of Palli Daridro Bimochon Foundation
Mahabbat Hossain and Chief Instructor of Rangpur Technical Training Centre
Nazmul Haque were present as special guests.

Vice-president of Rangpur Rangdhanu Protibondhi Adhikar Sangstha Md. Nure
Alam delivered a welcome speech while Filed Coordinator of NCDW Md.
Hasanuzzaman presented the keynote essay.

In his presentation, Hasanuzzaman discussed problems and socioeconomic
conditions of disabled population, steps taken by the government for their
inclusion, participation and representation in development activities for
their mainstreaming in the society.

He suggested for adopting special uplift and rehabilitation programmes for
disabled population, providing need-based trainings to pave the way to become
engaged in employment and income generating activities for their development.

The chief guest narrated the steps taken by the government to ensure
inclusion and representation of disabled people in uplift activities and
provide education and training to make them productive human resources for
attaining the SDGs by 2030.

“The present government is committed to mainstreaming people with
disabilities through ensuring their development,” he said, and urged the NGOs
to give priority to disabled population for their uplift.
