Dr Wazed’s 78th birth anniversary observed
PIRGANJ, Rangpur, Feb 16, 2020 (BSS) – The 78th birth anniversary of internationally-
reputed nuclear scientist and Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina’s husband Dr MA Wazed Miah was
observed at his birth place at Peerganj in Rangpur in a befitting manner today.
A large number of organisations chalked out day-long programmes in Rangpur district in
observance of his birthday.
The programmes included placing of wreaths at the grave of Dr Wazed Miah, offering
Fateha, milad mehfils and special munajats, distribution of food among the poor and
distressed people and memorial discussions.
After the Johr prayers, Zila Awami League arranged milad mahfil and a memorial discussion
where General Secretary of Upazila Awami League Tamijul Islam Shamim conducted the meeting
With Zila Awami League vice-President and nephew of Wazed Miah, Shayadat Hossain Bokul in the
chair.
Earlier, on behalf of Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Zila Awami
League Vice-President Shayadat Hossain Bokul, Vice-chancellor of BRUR Professor Dr Nazmul
Ahsan Kalimullah, Local Deputy Commissioner Asib Ahsan, Additional Police Super Abu Maruf
Hossain and representatives of Rangpur Dr. Wazed Srity Sangsad, Dr.Wazed Research and
Training Institute of the University and local educational institutions placed wreaths and
offered Fateha and munajats seeking divine blessings for departed soul of Dr. Wazed and
welfare of his family members.
Later, after Aster the Johr prayers, Begum Rokeya University arranged a milad mahfil at
the university’s central Jam-e-Mosque. Teachers, students, officials and employees of the
university took part in the milad mahfil.
Besides, Jahangirnagar University also paid tribute to Wazed Miah. JU VC Farzana Islam
paid tribute to Dr. Wazed at his mural and placed floral wreaths there as a mark of respect
while Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Md. Amir Hossain , Pro-Vice Chancellor
(Education) Prof. Md. Nurul Alam , Deans of different departments , Acting Register,
provosts, Proctor, teachers, officials and employees, among others, were present at the
function.
On February 16 in 1942, Wazed Miah was born in a respectable Muslim family of Laldighi
Fatehpur village under Pirganj upazila in Rangpur district.
He breathed his last in Dhaka on May 9, 2009 and was buried at the family graveyard at
his village home in Rangpur.
