1/11 changeover was created for BNP’s reckless graft: Hasan

DHAKA, Feb 12, 2020 (BSS) – Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said the reckless corruption of BNP and its mismanagement in governing the state had contributed to the 1/11 changeover in the country.

“Those who were trying to divert the course of politics into another direction were the beneficiaries of the 1/11 situation. A vested quarter is still out to demoralise the characters of politicians,” he said while addressing a book launching ceremony at Jatiya Press Club here.

Hasan unveiled the cover of the book titled ‘Amar Dekha One Eleven’, written by Prof Dr Syed Modasser Ali.

Speaking as the chief quest, he said martial law was proclaimed during the Pakistan era to divert the politics to another direction, while the politics and politicians were undermined publicly in Bangladesh during the 1/11 changeover.

“The then military-backed caretaker government had tried heart and soul to sustain its power,” he added.

Hasan, also the Awami League joint general secretary, said a vested quarter killed Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman after being failed to face him politically.

He said this quarter is now hatching intrigues against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the elder daughter of Bangabandhu, as it suffered a defeat to her political tactics and leadership.

“BNP and its allies have failed to face Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina politically. Now they have joined hands with the actors of the 1/11 changeover,” the information minister said.

He added: “They are now involved in conspiracy. They want to oust the Awami League government at any cost.”

Hasan said Sheikh Hasina criticised the then caretaker government while visiting the ailing singer Sabina Yasmin at LabAid Hospital here, and two days after her criticism, she was arrested.

“And subsequently many AL leaders were arrested too, while my spouse and I were compelled to leave my home and live in other’s houses,” he said.

Noting that sweetmeats were distributed after AL President Sheikh Hasina was arrested during the 1/11 period, Hasan said democracy restored in the country after her release after the 1/11.

“Democracy was established in Bangladesh through the hands of Sheikh Hasina. Today, Bangladesh has turned into a prestigious state. Sheikh Hasina is not only the AL president and the prime minister but also a leader of state (statesman),” he said.

The AL joint general secretary said Sheikh Hasina has now established herself as a global leader.

Highlighting the contribution of Bangabandhu to the country’s independence, he said if any politician fails to show bravery in politics, one day he or she will be lost from the politics.

The brave leadership of Bangabandhu helped achieve an independent Bangladesh, Hasan said, adding that the Father of the Nation had loved best Bangladesh and its people.

Hasan thanked Prof Dr Syed Modasser Ali for writing a book on the 1/11 changeover.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Syed Modasser Ali said as Bangladesh was liberated under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, now “we can speak freely”.

“We all should stand by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to build a Sonar Bangla dreamt by Bangabandhu,” he added.

Chaired by senior journalist Syed Burhan Kabir, the function was addressed, among others, by acting editor of Daily Jugantor and Jatiya Press Club president Saiful Alam, Daily Bangladesh Protidin editor Naem Nizam, Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (Swachip) secretary general Dr MA Aziz, writer Subhash Singha Roy and poet Shahana Parveen.

Bangladesh Federal Union Journalist (BFUJ) secretary general Shaban Mahmood moderated the function.

Saiful Alam said Prof Dr Syed Modasser Ali has shown his courage by writing the book titled ‘Amar Dekha One Eleven’. This book will encourage people to maintain the democratic polity in the country.

Naem Nizam said the then military-backed caretaker government was involved in a dirty game of destroying democracy aiming to sustain its power.

He said all should be imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War with a view to strengthening the country’s democracy and fulfilling the dream of Bangabandhu.
