DHAKA, Feb 12, 2020 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today ordered that vehicles without appropriate fitness certificates will not be allowed to ply on roads across the country.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam passed the order after receiving a report of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) on number of vehicles without fitness certificates.

The court also asked BRTA and police to inform it by February 16 about how the unfit vehicles are still operating on roads.

“There were five lakh vehicles across the country without fitness certificates till October 23, 2019. From that day to December 30, 2019, only 1, 65,764 vehicles have renewed their fitness certificates,” BRTA lawyer Rafiul Islam told BSS.

The High Court on July 23, 2019, ordered owners of unfit vehicles to renew their fitness certificates from August 1 to September 30.

The court on June 24 had directed BRTA to submit lists of vehicles and drivers, whose fitness certificates and driving licenses haven’t been renewed after expiration.

Supreme Court lawyer advocate Syed Mamun Mahbub earlier drew the court’s attention towards a report of an English daily about the free movement of unfit vehicles.

The court on March 27, 2019, issued a rule in this regard and asked the BRTA director to appear before it on July 23 and gave explanation.
