UN-Habitat vows to help Bangladesh ensure modern urbanisation

DHAKA, Feb 11, 2020 (BSS) – The United Nations Human Settlements Programme
(UN-Habitat) has assured Bangladesh of providing support for ensuring
environment-friendly, modern and planned urbanisation here.

The assurance came when UN Under Secretary-General and UN-Habitat Executive
Director Maimunah Mohd Sharif held a meeting with Housing and Public Works
Minister SM Rezaul Karim on the sidelines of the World Urban Forum in Abu
Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to a message received
here.

Rezaul said the Bangladesh government is working to build sustainable
cities and towns by ensuring civic amenities and affordable and green housing
for all citizens.

Works continue to prepare master plans across the country to ensure
sustainable urbanisation, he said, adding that the Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina-led government has already prepared the Delta Plan-2100.

The housing and public works minister said the UN-Habitat can play an
important role in developing Bangladesh’s urban policy.

About Rohingya crisis, he said providing food, healthcare, accommodation
and sanitation facilities to the forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens is a
hard task for Bangladesh.

That is why the world community should come forward to resolve the long-
standing Rohingya crisis, Rezaul added.
