Govt working to eliminate poverty by 2031: Mannan
SANGSAD BHABAN, Feb 10, 2020 (BSS) – Planning Minister M A Mannan today said the present government is working to fully eradicate extreme poverty by bringing it down to zero percent by 2031.
” The target of the present government is to make complete elimination of the extreme poverty by turning it down to zero percent from its present level of 10.5 percent,” he said while responding to a query made by treasury bench member M Abdul Latif from Chattogram-11 in the House.
Mannan said the implementation of the ‘vision-2021’ which was undertaken by the present government is now at the end, adding that the enactment of the long term planning ‘vision-2041’ is now at the final stage.
The main target of the vision-2041 is to bring down the present 10.5 percent extreme poverty to zero percent by 2031 and medium poverty under 5 percent, he added.
In 2000, country’s poverty rate was 48.9 percent and it was 40 percent in 2005 while the poverty rate was drastically reduced after the present government led by the Awami League came to power in 2009.
The minister said the extreme poverty rate was 34.3 percent in 2000 and 25.1 percent in 2005 while it declined to 17.6 percent in 2010, 12.1 percent in 2016 and 10.5 percent in 2019.
