Educated people should become local body representative: Tajul

DHAKA, Feb 9, 2020 (BSS) – Local Government and Rural Development Minister Md Tajul Islam today said rooms should be created for educated and respectable persons to get elected as local government representatives.

He also said, local government institutions should be taken to a prestigious place so that educated people become interested in participating in local body elections.

He made the comments while speaking as chief guest at a workshop organized by Local Government Division’s Local Governance Support Project-3 at Department of Public Health Engineering auditorium in the capital.

Local Government Division (LGD) Senior Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed and Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Mostafizur Rahman spoke at the event as the special guests with Local Government Division’s Additional Secretary Roksana Kader in the chair.

Tajul said, the programs undertaken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to make Bangladesh a developed country by 2041 are aimed at empowering and democratizing the local government institutions.

“We give the highest importance to democracy. Our government is implementing various agendas to fulfill the will of the people and the Union Council is playing the most important role in this regard,” he commented.

Among others, officials of local government divisions, zilla parishads, upazila parishads and chairmen of union councils attended the workshop.
