Comprehensive efforts for development of disabled people stressed

RANGPUR, Feb 07, 2020 (BSS) – Leaders of different organisations
working for welfare of disabled people at a discussion today stressed on
comprehensive GO-NGO efforts for inclusive development of the physically
challenged people.

The district administration and Department of Social Services (DSS)
organised the discussion at Rangpur Press Club auditorium in the city in
observance of the Bangla Sign Language Day-2020.

Society for the Welfare of the Intellectually Disabled, Bangladesh (SWID
Bangladesh) and ‘Rangpur Muk Badhir Sangha (RMBS)’ extended assistance in
observing the day through different programmes, including a rally followed by
the discussion.

The rally with participation of hundreds of physically challenged,
hearing impaired and intellectually disabled people, students, guardians,
teachers, officials of different organisations and civil society members
paraded the main city streets.

Deputy Director of the DSS for Rangpur Md Mossarraf Hossain addressed
the discussion as the chief guest with Disability Affairs Officer at ‘Rangpur
Protibondhi Seba O Sahajjo Kendra’ Taposh Kumar Barma in the chair.

Executive Secretary of SWID Bangladesh for Rangpur Shushanto Bhowmick
and President of RMBS Shariful Karim Sharfu addressed the discussion as
special guests.

Probation Officer of the DSS Nazrul Islam, Consultant (Physiotherapy) at
‘Rangpur Protibondhi Seba O Sahajjo Kendra’ Md Ashrafuzzaman, Vice-president
of RMBS Iftekhar Ahmmed and Principal of Lalkuthi Girls High School and
College Abdur Rouf spoke.

Iftekhar Ahmmed discussed the academic, training and extracurricular
activities being conducted at RMBS for the physically challenged, disabled,
deaf and dumb and vision impaired population at their office in Rangpur city.

Nazrul Islam discussed the massive programmes being implemented by the
government to ensure education, training, health services and extracurricular
activities for physically challenged, disabled, deaf and dumb and vision
impaired population.

The chief guest put emphasis on mainstreaming and empowering the people
with different types and extents of disabilities through joint efforts of the
government and non-government organisations to attain the sustainable
development goals (SDGs).

He suggested for engaging comprehensive GO-NGO efforts to support the
physically challenged people to turn them into human resources through
ensuring their development, empowerment, employment, constitutional rights
and social security.
