Awareness needed to prevent cancer disease: Speakers

NARSINGDI, Feb 5, 2020 (BSS) – Speakers at a discussion meeting
underscored the need for creating public awareness of the deadly disease
cancer and its treatment.

The incidence of cancer is now on the rise. Tobacco use, both smoking
and chewing is the single most important factor for cancer, they said while
addressing the meeting organized by Civil Surgeon office at its conference
room to mark the World Cancer Day-2020 yesterday.

This year the theme of the day ‘I Am and I will’.

Civil Surgeon of Narsingdi Dr Mohammad Ibrahim Titon presided over the
meeting. Sadar upazila health and family planning officer Dr Mohammad Abu
Kawsar Oman, medical officer of the civil surgeon office Dr Nasimul Islam,
BSS district correspondent Mohammad Abu Taher and member of local union
parishad Joynal Abden addressed the discussion, among others.

Dr Ibrahim said about four lakh people are being affected by cancer
every year in the country and cancer deaths can be reduced considerably if
cases are detected and treated early.

He said we should know about the symptoms and causes of cancer and also
take steps to prevent the disease.

Dr Ibrahim underscored the need for creating awareness among people to
make healthy life choices in reducing the risk of cancer.
