DHAKA, Feb 04, 2020 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today ordered the University Grants Commission (UGC) to monitor the process of conferring PhD and equivalent degrees in public and private universities and submit a report within three months.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order and issued a rule in this regard.

The court also ordered the Dhaka University authorities to probe the allegation of PhD research forgery by one of its teachers and submit report within 60 days.

The court came up with the orders after holding hearing on a writ filed by Supreme Court lawyer Md Moniruzzaman.

The petitioner himself moved the writ before the court, while deputy attorney general Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar appeared for the state.

The court in its rule asked the officials concerned, including the education secretary, the UGC chairman and the Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University to explain why an order shall not passed to scrutinize thesis proposals by ICT expert before finalizing those.
