People turn down hartal: Nasim

DHAKA, Feb 2, 2020 (BSS) – Awami League (AL) presidium member and central 14-party alliance spokesman Mohammed Nasim today said people have rejected BNP’s hartal with abhorrence.

“People have turned down the hartal called by BNP. No hartal was enforced in Dhaka today. BNP has staged a drama in the name of hartal,” he told reporters after an emergency meeting of the alliance on city elections at his Dhanmondi residence here.

Nasim said the victory of AL in the Dhaka city elections is very significant at the beginning of the Mujib Year. “This victory is a triumph of democracy and pro-liberation forces as well,” he added.

He said the new mayors are competent and the government will provide all-out support for implementation of their election pledges.

The AL presidium member said: “Ahead of Dhaka city polls, the newly elected mayors pledged to build a clean and mosquito-free city. We hope they will keep their commitments”.

He said BNP leaders had issued various warnings ahead of the city elections, but they were not found on the ground.

Blaming that BNP misled people by carrying out a month-long propaganda against EVM use in polls, the 14-party alliance spokesman said as senior BNP leaders were not found on the ground ahead of the elections, BNP-backed candidates continued their fight alone.

About the city polls, he said the elections were held in a free, fair and peaceful manner, which ensured active participation of city dwellers.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president Hasanul Haq Inu, former disaster management and relief minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, state minister for information Dr Md Murad Hasan, Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal general secretary Dilip Barua, Jatiya Party (JP) secretary general Sheikh Shahidul Islam and Gono Azadi League president Dr Shahadat Hossain were, among others, present.
