Atiqul takes lead in DNCC mayoral polls

DHAKA, Feb 1, 2020 (BSS) – Awami League mayoral candidate Atiqul Islam is leading the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) elections with a huge margin of votes.

Atiqul bagged 4,15,802 votes while his nearest BNP contestant Tabith Awal got 2,42,841 votes in 1,205 polling centers, out of 1,318, till 1.45 am.

Earlier, the voting began at 8am and it continued till 4pm without any break. The election was held entirely through the electronic voting machines (EVMs) method for the first time in this major local body polls.

A total of seven mayoral candidates contested in the DNCC elections.

In DNCC, there were 30 lakh 10 thousand 273 voters. Of them, 15, 49,567 were male and 14, 60,706 were female. There are 54 general and 18 reserved (women) wards in the city corporation.

Around 50,000 members of law enforcement agencies were deployed in the two city corporations to ensure the security.

Members of Police and Ansar were deployed to ensure security at polling centers while BGB, RAB and river police will ensure security in the election areas.

A total of 129 executive magistrates and 64 judicial magistrates were deployed in the two city corporations. 54 executive magistrates will stay in the election field in Dhaka north and 75 more in Dhaka south from today to February 2.

A total of 1013 local observers of 22 institutions monitored the polls while 74 persons acted as foreign observers.
