No scope of irregularity in voting with EVM: Nanak

DHAKA, Feb 1, 2020 (BSS) – Awami League (AL) Presidium Member Jahangir Kabir Nanak today said there is no scope of irregularity in taking votes with the electronic voting machines (EVM).

“The voting of two Dhaka city corporation elections is underway using the EVM. There is no scope of anomaly in the system,” he told a press conference at AL President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office in the city this afternoon.

Noting that about 546,0328 voters are exercising their franchisees, Nanak said the voters are casting their votes with enthusiasm in a peaceful environment amid festivity.

About remarks of envoys of different countries over polls, the AL leader said the diplomats are supposed to bide by some norms in any independent and sovereign country.

But, in Bangladesh, they don’t want to follow the norms, he said, adding, “We lodged complaints over the matter. They (envoys) have been urged to follow the diplomatic norms”.

Speaking about BNP, Nanak said making complaints over elections is an old habit of BNP.

They (BNP) are spreading falsehood sensing their defeat in the elections, he said, adding BNP-nominated mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain started spreading confusions after casting his vote in the morning.

Hoping that the AL-nominated candidates will win the polls, the AL presidium member said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed holding a free, fair and neutral election.

AL Joint General Secretaries and Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni and Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, Office Secretary Barrister Biplob Barua, Liberation War Affairs Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das and Central Working Committee Member Shahabuddin Farazi were present at the press conference, among others.
