Deputy Speaker for finding alternate to stop tobacco farming

DHAKA, Jan 30, 2020 (BSS) – Deputy Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Advocate Fazle
Rabbi Mia today underscored the need for finding out alternative agri-
produces to stop tobacco farming.

“Tobacco is a cash crop, but simultaneously it is harmful for the nation.
So, before stopping cultivation of tobacco, we have to find out alternate
crop for the farmers,” said Fazle Rabbi Mia while speaking as the chief guest
at a `National Dialogue 2020′ at CIRDAP auditorium here.

Chairperson of Campaign for Good Governance Abdul Awal chaired the dialogue
while Khodeja Nasrin Akter Hossain MP spoke on the occasion.

The Deputy Speaker said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has pledged to make
the country drug and tobacco free by 2040. The production of tobacco is
gradually falling and farmers are now cultivating maize instead of tobacco,
he added.

Fazle Rabbi Mia also urged farmers to cultivate corn more instead of
tobacco to utilize their land and meet the local demand of foods.
