DHAKA, Jan 30, 2020 (BSS) – Personal secretary (PS) of BNP mayoral
candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation Ishraque Hossain was arrested for allegedly shooting during a clash that took place between the supporters of Awami League and BNP in city’s Gopibagh area on January 26.
Ariful Islam, 47, also a former leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, was
arrested in possession of a firearm and 50 rounds of bullets from city’s
Hatirjheel area, said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Abdul Baten addressing a press briefing at DMP media centre today.
The bullet caps, recovered from the spot of the clash, primarily matched
with the bullets of his pistol, said Abdul Baten.
A case will be filed against Ariful under Arms Act, he added. During
primary interrogation, Ariful, who was identified after examining the video
footages collected from nearby areas, also admitted opening fire during the
clash, Baten added.

Ishraque Hossain and AL-backed councilor candidate Rokon Uddin Ahmed clashed
during campaigning in Gopibag Central Women’s College area, leaving scores of
people injured.
Several gunshots were heard during the clash, locals said, adding a number
of vehicles were also vandalized.
