1 U.S. soldier killed, 4 wounded in Somalia

WASHINGTON, June 9, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – The U.S. Department of Defense said
Friday that one U.S. soldier was killed and four others were wounded in an
attack in the African country of Somalia.

The attack took place in Jubaland, where U.S. Special Operations Force was
carrying out an operation with Somali and Kenyan partners against Al Shabab
militants. The combined force came under mortar and small arms fire, leading
to casualties.

The names of those killed and wounded are being withheld until their
relatives are notified, the Pentagon said.

The death of the soldier came after four U.S. soldiers were killed in Niger
last year in a operation a Pentagon report found to be ill prepared and was
not sanctioned by proper officials. Both Somalia and Niger fall under the
area of responsibility of the U.S. Africa Command.
