DHAKA, Jan 26, 2020 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today ordered the High Court to dispose of soon the rule it had issued over the legitimacy of the gazette notification for implementing the recommendations of ninth wage board for journalists and employees of newspapers and news agencies.

A four-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order while disposing of petitions filed by the state and Newspapers Owners Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) over the High Court status quo on publishing gazette notification for implementing the recommendations of the 9th wage board.

“The stay on the High Court status quo will continue, thus making no legal bar in implementing the recommendations of the 9th wage board,” Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said.

The apex court on August 20, 2029, stayed for eight weeks the High Court order that had imposed the status quo.

Terming the initial writ against publishing gazette notification for implementing the recommendations of ninth wage board, pre-matured, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam had said the petitioner filed the writ as he does not want to pay the salary to journalists properly.

“Without journalists, the owners of newspapers do not have any existence,” the court observed at the time of the hearing.
