SC fines 3 private varsities for violating UGC direction

DHAKA, Jan 26, 2020 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today fined three private universities taka 10 lakh each for violating direction of University Grants Commission (UGC) over admission of students.

A four-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order, after holding hearing on an appeal filed by Bangladesh Bar Council against a High Court ruling in this regard.

The three universities are: Easter University, Bangladesh Islamia University and South-East University. The Appellate Division asked the first two to donate the money to Liver Transplant Unit of BIRDEM Hospital and South-East University to donate the money to Kidney Foundation.

These three varsities enrolled students, more than the number fixed by the UGC for Law Department under each semester. As the students, after getting their degrees, tried to sit for bar council enrollment exams, they were barred, prompting them to file writs with the High Court. The court in an interim order asked the Bar Council to allow them to sit for the enrollment exams.

Bangladesh Bar Council later filed an appeal against the High Court order.

The Appellate Division in its order today asked the three varsities to submit to bar council the receipt of the money to be donated for allowing the students to have registration cards and the chance for fill up exam forms.
