RCC opens Tk 5-cr schemes for uplifting marginal people

RAJSHAHI, Jan 23, 2020 (BSS) – Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) authority
here today inaugurated a Taka 5 crore infrastructure development schemes for
improving living and livelihood condition of the city’s marginal population.

The development schemes include construction of 15 hygienic latrines,
2,708 meters of footpaths and 818 meters of drains including slabs.

The RCC will implement the schemes under a project titled ‘Livelihoods
Improvement of Urban Poor Communities (LIUPC)’ with financial support of
DFID, UKaid, Government of Bangladesh and UNDP.

City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton inaugurated the development schemes in
four separate areas as the chief guest.

In the sideline of the opening events, Executive Engineer Nur Islam told
BSS that around 45,000 slum and marginal households will get scopes of
improving their living and livelihood condition through the anti-poverty
project in the city within next five years.

He said the project is intended to achieve long-term sustainable growth by
eradicating urban poverty and achieving Sustainable Development Goals by
2030.

The project has been designed to reach initially the underserved urban
population in the city and to promote livelihoods and living conditions of
2.20 lakh poor people living in urban areas.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Liton urged all concerned to discharge
their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty for successful implementation
of the project so that the target group of people can derive its total
benefits.

He also sought the cooperation of his council members in this regard
terming them as key-persons to implement the project successfully. RCC Ward
Councilors concerned, community development leaders and other stakeholders
were present on the occasion.
