Appeal with SC seeking stay on DCC polls

DHAKA, Jan 16, 2020 (BSS) – A new petition was filed today with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) challenging the High Court’s order that upheld the decision of the Election Commission (EC) in holding the elections to the two Dhaka city corporations on January 30.

Advocate Ashoke Kumar Ghosh today filed the appeal with the country’s apex court, seeking its directive on the EC to stay the January 30 elections to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) as it coincides with Saraswati Puja, court officials said.

Earlier on January 14, a High Court Bench rejected his (Ashoke) another writ petition filed over the issue on January 5.

In the petition, the lawyer said Saraswati Puja, one of the religious festivals of the Hindu community, is scheduled to take place at almost all the academic institutions in the capital on the election day and the previous day as well.

He mentioned that the polls activities would hamper the festival, adding “It (holding polls on January 30) is contradictory to the religious sentiment.”

Talking to journalists on the court premises, the lawyer said the hearing of the chamber court of the SC may be held on Sunday next.
