Arrest warrant issued against Prothom Alo editor, 9 others

DHAKA, Jan 16, 2020 (BSS) – A court here today issued a warrant of arrest against Daily Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman, deputy editor Anisul Hoque and eight others in a case filed over the death of Dhaka Residential Model College student Nayeemul Abrar Rahat.

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate, Dhaka Kaisarul Islam passed the order after holding hearing on a report submitted by investigation officer (IO) Abdul Alim, officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station.

IO Alim submitted the report under section 304(A) of the Penal Code.

Other accused in the case are Kabir Bakul, Shubhashish Pramanik Shuvo, Mohitul Alam Pavel, Shah Paran Tusher, Jasim Uddiind Apu, Mosharraf Hossain, Sujan and Kamrul Haider.

Abrar, 15, a student of class-nine of Dhaka Residential Model College, died after getting electrocuted at a programme titled “Ki Ananda”, a function of the daily Prothom Alo’s magazine for juveniles Kishor Alo, on November 1, 2019.

The victim’s father Mujibur Rahman filed the case with Dhaka additional chief metropolitan magistrate’s court on November 6. In his plea he accused the death of Abrar was caused by the negligence of the organisers.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (in-charge) Md Aminul Haque heard the complaint and took it into cognisance.

Hearing the complaint, the court directed the authorities concerned to exhume Abrar’s body and conduct an autopsy on it.

It also ordered the officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station to submit an investigation report on the case on December 1, 2019 after merging it with the report of the unnatural death case filed earlier in this connection.

In the complaint, Mojibur said his son was electrocuted and fell unconscious while attending the programme of Kishor Alo.

Abrar was taken to Universal Medical College and Hospital in Mohakhali 45 minutes after the incident happened, whereas Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital was on the opposite side of the event venue, Mojibur complained.

Abrar might have been alive if the authorities had immediately taken him to the nearby hospital, he mentioned.
