Sales points violating tobacco control laws in Rangpur: Survey

RANGPUR, Jan 15, 2020 (BSS) – A survey conducted last year by Association for Community Development (ACD) revealed that 90 percent sales points of tobacco products are violating tobacco control laws in Rangpur city.

Officials of ACD disclosed the information at a press conference arranged by the organisation with assistance of Campaign for Tobacco- Free Kids at Learning and Resource Centre in the city on Tuesday afternoon, a press release said today.

Assistant Police Commissioner (Kotwali Zone) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Jamir Uddin attended the event as the chief guest with Focal Person of Rangpur regional Tobacco Control Coalition Shushanto Bhowmick in the chair.

Director (Programme) of ACD Sharmin Subrina delivered welcome speech in the meeting moderated by its Media Manager Amjad Hossain Shimul.

Grants Manager of Campaign for Tobacco- Free Kids Abdus Salam Mian attended the press conference as special guest.

Advocacy Officer of ACD Md. Shariful Islam Shameem delivered PowerPoint presentation on the survey titled ‘Advertisement of tobacco products, publicity, incentives and patronisation’ in the event.

“We conducted the survey on a random basis at 392 points of sales of tobacco products out of total 4,845 such sales points in all 33 wards of Rangpur city where 90 percent of sales points were found violating the tobacco control laws,” he said.

Abdus Salam Mian called upon all concerned to engage comprehensive efforts to make the government efforts a success through building a tobacco free society for the next generation by 2040 next.

Sharmin Subrina urged the district administration to take more effective steps in stopping illegal advertisement and publicity of tobacco products at 90 percent sales points in Rangpur city under patronization of some tobacco companies.

The chief guest said Rangpur Metropolitan Police will take steps and assist the authorities concerned for strict enforcement of the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act, Amended Tobacco Control Act and related policies.
