Vitamin A plus capsule campaign observed in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, Jan 11, 2020 (BSS) – As part of the countrywide programme, the
vitamin A plus capsule campaign was observed today in the district as
elsewhere in the country.

“As many as 3,213,07 children in Jamalpur district were fed vitamin A plus
capsule,” Civil Surgeon of Jamalpur Dr Gautam Roy told at the inaugural
function of the campaign here.

Divisional Director, Health, Dr Md Abul Kashem inaugurated the campaign on
Jamalpur General Hospital premises by feeding vitamin A to a child this
morning.

Dr Gautam said of the total, 35,054 children aged between six months and
11 months were given blue color capsule while some 2,86,253 children aged
between 12 and 59 months were administered red color capsule on the day.

The civil surgeon said a total of 1,692 centers including 684 permanent
centers were set up for conducting the campaign.

According to health experts, less than one percent children now suffer
from blindness problem while the percentage of blindness for vitamin A
deficiency was 3.74 in 1974. “With sincere efforts of the government, we have
been able to reduce blindness problem,” they added.

The impact of vitamin-A deficiency is not limited to only blindness, the
experts said, adding it increases death risk by causing various diseases.

“Vitamin A plus capsule is fed two times a year as it deposits up to six
months in children’s body. Alongside having vitamin A plus capsule, guardians
should feed their children natural foods including vegetable and fish to
avoid vitamin A deficiency,” health experts added.
