DU students demand capital punishment of rapist
DHAKA, Jan 8, 2020 (BSS) – Agitating students of Dhaka University (DU)
today continued demonstration for the third consecutive day, seeking justice
for one of their fellow students who was raped in city’s Kurmitola are while
going to her friend’s house on Sunday evening.
Hundreds of students staged demonstration on the campus at several places
under different banners from morning to afternoon, demanding capital
punishment of the rapist.
A group of students of 2018-19 academic-year of DU formed a human chain on
the premises of Raju Memorial Sculpture around 1 pm demanding and sought
justice for their fellow student.
While addressing the protest rally, the agitating students urged all the
authorities concerned to bring the culprits to book immediately and ensure
capital punishment of the rapist. They also urged the university
administration to ensure security of all other students.
Rape has become a social disease for our country, government and the
concerned authorities should ensure exemplary punishment of the rapist so
that none dares to do such heinous crime in future, Anika Anjum Arny, a
fellow student of the victim, said in the human chain.
This rape case should be transferred to the speedy tribunal and rapist
should be hanged publicly to set an example, said another DU student named
Moshaid Ali.
Apart from this, other students of DU and ‘Bangladesh Post Friends Forum’
also staged demonstration on the campus demanding capital punishment of the
rapist.
Earlier on January 5, the rape took place while the victim was walking
from Kurmitola bus stop to a friend’s house in nearby Sheora area around
7:30pm after getting down from a university bus.
On Tuesday night, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a suspect named
Manju, 30, in connection with the rape case.
